2 Simple Ways to Download ITR Acknowledgement in 2022

Income tax return filing is compulsory if your annual income is above Rs.2,50,000 and when you pay your income tax, you receive an acknowledgment. 

Earlier you have to download the acknowledgment, print it, sign it and then post it to the central hub in Bengaluru.

But now the IT department has introduced Aadhar based e-verification of return filing and we’ll discuss both methods in this article. 

Before digging deep into how to download ITR acknowledgment, let’s first start with What is ITR acknowledgment.

What is ITR Acknowledgement

ITR acknowledgment is provided by the IT department to verify the legitimacy of the taxpayer’s ITR e-filing. It is also called ITR-V which means Income Tax Return Verification. 

The important point here is that you need ITR acknowledgment only if you file ITR without a digital signature.   

ITR-V acknowledgment is a single-page document, which you have to sign with a BLUE INK pen and send either through ordinary post or speed post. You shouldn’t courier the ITR-V as per the income tax department’s guidelines.

Secondly, you don’t have to attach any supporting documents along with the ITR-V. Just post the signed ITR-V only. 

How to Download ITR Acknowledgement

#1. Download ITR Acknowledgement from the e-Filing Portal

Step 1- Visit the income tax India website at www.incometax.gov.in and log in.

Step 2 – Select the ‘e-File’ > ’Income Tax Returns’ > ’View Filed Returns’ option to see e-filed tax returns.

Step 3 – Now click on the ‘Download Form’ for the relevant assessment year. The ITR-V would be downloaded.

Step 4 – You can now print, sign, and send this acknowledgment to CPC Bangalore within 120 days from the date of e-filing, in case you have not e-verified your income tax return.

You have to send it via ordinary post or speed post to the address below –

Step 5 – You can check the status of ITR-V received by CPC Bangalore online at Incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in 

If your ITR-V acknowledgment has not been marked as received after 10 days, you can call 1800-425-2229 (timings 9 AM to 5 PM)

#2. Download ITR Acknowledgment after Aadhar Verification 

The income tax department has introduced a new way to verify your ITR using the Aadhar verification which is much faster and more efficient. 

When you file your ITR, you get an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) which is a 10 digit alphanumeric code sent to the registered mobile number. The code helps the department to verify the identity of the tax filers. 

You can be an individual tax filer as well as Hindu Undivided Family (HUF). The individuals have to self-verify their returns while in HUF, the Karta must verify the returns. You can generate the  EVC through the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department.

How to do the e-verification through Aadhar

Make sure your Aadhar is linked to your PAN before e-verify your return. The process is mentioned below –

Step 1- Upload your ITR on the Income Tax e-Filing website. 

Step 2 – Once ITR is uploaded the ITR successfully, you will get 4 options or moded of verification for your returns as shown below –

  1. I already have an EVC to e-verify my return.
  2. I do not have an EVC and would like to generate EVC to e-Verify my return.
  3. I would like to generate Aadhaar OTP to e-Verify my return.
  4. I would like to send ITR-V/I would like to e-verify Later.

Select Option-3 “I would like to generate Aadhaar OTP to e-Verify my return”. 

You’ll receive a one-time password (OTP) to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar (OTP valid for 10 mins only).

Step 3 – Enter the OTP number on the page and click on ‘Submit.’ You will then get a confirmation message that would look like “Return successfully e-Verified”. Download the Acknowledgement.

You have now successfully e-filed and e-verified your income tax return. You’ll also receive the acknowledgment at your registered email id.
